No Yard, No Problem: The Balcony Garden Revolution
Now that the sun is clocking in for longer shifts, it's officially time to get those plants in the ground—or, if you're like me, into some cute pots on your balcony. No yard? No problem! Every year, I turn my little patch of outdoor space into a full-on produce party. Fresh herbs, juicy tomatoes, and some delicious peppers—chef’s kiss. It's the perfect excuse to step away from the screen and reconnect with the real world (and actual dirt).
Where to Buy Plants (aka Where the Magic Begins):
You’ve got options. Farmer’s markets are a great place to find small, transplant-ready plants. Bonus: they’re often heartier, local varieties that don’t immediately die of culture shock. And you get to support local farmers!
No farmer’s market nearby? No worries. Big box stores like Home Depot also carry a surprisingly solid plant selection. My MVPs for balcony gardening: basil, jalapeños, and those adorable Little Sicily tomatoes that taste like summer sunshine. Pro tip: make sure whatever you pick is pot-friendly. Nobody wants a tomato vine taking over their living room.
Feeling bold? Citrus trees can survive in pots if you bring them indoors for winter. Ask my lemon tree—she’s currently working on twins.
Get Planting (aka Your Phone Detox, But Make It Fun):
Once you’ve got your green gang and some potting soil, treat yourself to a gardening afternoon. Music on. Lemonade in hand. Dirt under your nails. It’s a vibe. Bonus: with your hands occupied, you won’t be tempted to scroll. Look at you, being grounded—literally.
What Next?
Water those babies! Keep them alive and they'll reward you with fresh ingredients and the smug satisfaction of not killing a plant. Maybe even swap your morning doom-scroll for a garden check-in. It’s a small change, but hey—today it’s watering basil, tomorrow you’re living off the land (okay, maybe not entirely, but you get it).
Before you know it, you’ll be cooking like a garden-to-table pro.
